Liver Pathology
The liver and hepatic transplant pathology is an integral part of anatomic pathology. It provides histopathologic evaluation of medical liver and tumor biopsies, allograft liver biopsies, hepatic resection and liver explants. Loyola pathology handles approximately 600 liver biopsies, 60 orthotopic liver transplants and 50 hepatic resections. Attending pathologists from Loyola GI pathology and cytopathology groups maintain a close working relationship in evaluating liver pathology cases. The attending pathologists, residents and fellows have consistent interactions with hepatologist, transplant surgeons, interventional radiologists, and surgical oncologists. For pathology residents and fellows on the GI/liver pathology rotation, you will actively participate in signing out all resected and explanted liver specimens, liver biopsy specimens, and consult cases. You also will have opportunities to present interesting cases intra-departmentally and at Illinois Registry of Anatomic Pathology (IRAP). It is optional for pathology residents and fellows to join collaborative research projects with other clinical and research departments, culminating in scholarly contributions to the medical literature.
