GI and Liver Pathology

Gastrointestinal pathology is a sub-specialty discipline of surgical pathology. We provide histopathologic evaluation of surgically resected specimens and biopsy tissues from the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, and biliary tract. We have consistent interaction with clinical colleagues including gastroenterologists, surgical oncologists, hepatologists, liver transplant surgeons, and medical oncologists. We actively participate gastrointestinal tumor board conference and provide histologic diagnosis, stage, and molecular inflammation of gastrointestinal cancer. More than 30% surgical pathology specimens are gastrointestinal type at Loyola. During your course of anatomic pathology residency training, you have enormous opportunities to study gastrointestinal histopathology, physiology, and disease mechanisms. You will have consistent interaction with clinical colleagues to ensure understanding of the clinical aspects of gastrointestinal diseases and treatment modalities. You also have opportunities to participate basic, translational, and clinical research. In addition, we have consistent interactions with our pathology colleagues, particularly cytopathologists. The ultimate educational goal is to help our trainees to become competent pathologists.
